This is so perfect. From the wheels to the Rallye Golf front. I need new pants..

Air scope or aftermarket lights?

From the wheels to the Rallye Golf front .
Sorry for being a bit of a dick, but it’s in the text.

So front means lights and grille? Still, those gaps above the lights are atrocious.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 10:48 |

The lights are from the Golf Rallye, a homologation model from the 80s.

It looks as if they flop around in the mounting holes.

My first car was (is!) a mk2 Golf. Very simple cars, parts are beyond cheap and easy to find and they’re reliable too. Quite the opposite of a modern Golf.
With it being 24 years after their discontinuation I do think ownership is becoming a bit less easy than what it was half a decade ago. Furthermore, they’re a bit basic.
If you’re not looking for a comfy long distance cruiser it could be a great first car. Skip the diesels though.

That’s just VW built quality.

Oh that’s not nice. Let’s call it SEAT build quality.

Read the speedhunters article and see how much he said the replacement headlight cost......
![]() 11/13/2015 at 10:56 |

It’s a consequence of mixing parts. Those aren’t Golf (much less Rallye) fenders and hood, so the line of the headlights and the line of the surrounding panels don’t match. That’s all. The parts fit pretty well, but aren’t perfect.

Aka rebadged VW built quality.

This was my parents’ very first car too. We still had it until four years ago. It was actually a great car. 1.3 liters and 55 hp were enough for the car. I’d really like to have one even though I hated it when my parents had it. I was stupid..

That’s always been my favorite generation Jetta. Growing up we had a 1986 Jetta GL Diesel non turbo pretty much identical to this.
I have so many memories in that car. If ever I was building up a Jetta it would be one of these.

The whole front is expensive af. I have a tuning catalogue from 1999/2000. Even back then it was so popular that it was sold out.

They just look so super clean and kinda timeless. I especially like the coupe.

aww yiss,
Rallye front is nice but too $$, my mkII all got smoked ecodes.. like this guy; mmm small bumpers..

I still own my first car, it too had 55 (54 I believe) hp from its fuel injected 1.3. Four speed manual. I parked it in a barn during the summer of 2013 because I wanted something more comfortable and more cheap to run (LPG!). There wasn’t anything really wrong with it back then. One day I’ll get it out of the barn and improve it a bit (moar power!).
Here’s my lineup circa 1-1-2013. My Golf, the €500 Legacy banger rally participant that I sold a few months later, and my current daily driven Peugeot 406 coupe.

A friend of mine had a Seat Ibiza when I had a VW Polo and they are similar cars on the same chassis built in the same factory in Spain. His had half the miles of mine and it was awful, the engine mounts were shot, trim kept falling off, everything was very vague feeling and rust was proliferating everywhere.
Same factory, a lot of shared components. We after the mounts failing we made a sticker for it Shit Engine Attachment Technology (SEAT)

You live the dream, man. Three cars that I like. (I have always liked the way the 406 coupe has looked like! Especially in green with brown interior)

My mom had a blue 85 or 86 Jetta, got wrecked late in 88 so we switched to Ford, because closer service and my dad had died, so no more easy rides to and fro.
Anyway... I saw a Mk2 Golf on its last legs this morning, so thank you for redeeming :)

I bet someone has the whole front end up in an attic or garage that they could sell for a ton of money.

Maybe some old guy without internet maybe haha
![]() 11/13/2015 at 11:27 |

You can’t kill them. The mechanical components are made to last and VW had learned about rust protection from the mk1 that was prone to rust away.

Mine is dark grey with a red leather interior. Absolutely great cars. Very reliable and great to drive, although (with the 2.0L) they aren’t really geared for high speed unrestricted Autobahn trips. 4500 RPM at 150 kmh.
Anyway, the Legacy is long gone. Next to the 406 and mk2 Golf I now own an ‘88 205 GTI, ‘87 205 CTI (my project car) and 306 convertible :) All the Peugeots are drivable and have a valid inspection, the 406 is the only one with a valid registration + insurance due to it being almost winter. Oh, and I’m working on a very rusty ‘85 Honda Prelude for another banger rally. From the Netherlands to Andorra, next (this!) winter. I can’t work on the Prelude often though, as it’s located at the in laws in Germany.
Note that I didn’t even own a car until I was 27 years old, 5.5 years ago...

Yeah, my Mk1 Jetta had NARSTY rust in the rear well
![]() 11/13/2015 at 11:38 |

If VW could guarantee you one thing with the mk1, it was rust.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 11:42 |

That gives me a little hope. I couldn’t really wait that long tbh. But you seem to have caught up by owning so many awesome cars.

I sometimes still think about my MkII Jetta tdi I had back in college. Same colour as this one.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:20 |

Look at the car they came off of. it has the same gap above the lights. Notice how there is no gap from the grille to the hood.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:30 |
|
Oh, my friend just picked one up...then hit a deer a few days later... that grill is one piece (black and red part) we found out... going to be fun to fix since we never got the rally trim state side.

Great cars. VWs of that vintage are just lovely.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 12:48 |

Well, the Rallye wasn’t just an ordinary trim. No, it was a homologation special with awd and almost 200hp or so.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 13:10 |

I know what a Rallye looks like. Sure, there’s a little gap above the headlights, but it’s not as big. Here’s a Rallye front end in the same color.
Look at the gap between the bottom of the grille and the bumper cover here, then above at the Jetta. Then look at the top of the grille on the Rallye (where the top slat is adjacent the hoodline) versus on the Jetta (where theres a gap, but a part of the grille not visible on the Golf is visible there.
It’s a good install on the Jetta, but when you are filling more space with less stuff, you are gonna have gaps. The outer upper corners of the lights vs the fender line are a giveaway. The openings and hoodlines are a bit different, and without swapping over the core support, hood, and fenders, you are not going to get it perfect.
![]() 11/13/2015 at 13:14 |
|
Come on, man. You can’t just point a gap out like that one out of the blue. How am I supposed to unsee it, now? HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO LOOK AT ANYTHING ELSE?

The funny thing is that there are actually many guys and gals in Europe that turn their cars into USDM spec.

tradesies?
The other funny thing is when I ordered dtm cup mirrors for my mk3 they were cheaper shipped to Canada from Germany than from the US..

Nice! My dad has a mint ‘86 golf and a daily ‘85 jetta, both with that little 1.6 n/a diesel. I love the hell out of them.

This whole thread is so much fun. We’re on mk2 numbers 5 & 6 in the family, plus a couple of foxes and a mk3. They’re great cars to grow up with!

I’m the local GLI fanboy, and that car is basically my car’s granddaddy! :D
I love the look of these! it’s what got me in to VW’s in the first place
![]() 11/14/2015 at 02:09 |

It’s a shame that VW doesn’t even offer the GLI in Germany. The mk2 Jettas and Golfs were just all around awesome cars. (I secretly want a G60 with 150hp)
![]() 11/14/2015 at 02:12 |

They are indeed. Simple enough to learn how to fix things yourself since the mechanical components were just solid and simple.
![]() 11/14/2015 at 02:15 |

The US doesn’t want your car to look good.
![]() 11/15/2015 at 08:54 |

I’m definitely with you on the simple part. Solid...sometimes yes, sometimes no. But simplicity of repairs and cheap parts makes that less important!
